what is biokinetics

Biokinetics is the field of specialised exercise therapy that is used in three different areas:

  • In the treatment and prevention of orthopaedic (musculoskeletal, joint) and sports injuries
  • In the management of chronic disease
  • In the promotion of total wellness (lifestyle and stress management)

Biokinetics is recognised by and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) allowing it to function in alliance to both the health and medical industries. Therefore Biokinetic treatment can be claimed from most medical aids.

what does a biokineticist do?

A Biokineticist is a clinical exercise specialist who can improve a person’s physical wellbeing and quality of life through individualised scientific assessment and the prescription of specific exercise in rehabilitative treatment. This is used to prevent or manage certain ailments as well as for the enhancement of performance in sport and work activities.

At Lisa Bain Biokineticists, exercise therapy is used to treat the following common conditions resulting from body misalignment, poor posture, and general degeneration:

  • Back pain (acute and chronic)
  • Joint pain (sports injuries, osteoarthritis)
  • Muscle strains and weakness
  • Repetitive strain injuries (sports injuries)
  • Headaches and neck pain

Pre-operative conditioning and postoperative rehabilitation are also offered under Biokinetic treatment.

Sports massage is also a service offered at the practice. It is a deep tissue massage that works for both athletes/active people and the general population. The techniques used alleviate tension from the muscles and fascia and increases circulation to these soft tissues, thereby aiding the body in the recovery process. The benefits of sports massage include faster recovery from training; stress relief; pain relief from chronic (postural) and acute muscle tightness; increased range of motion and flexibility.

It is an ideal accompanying treatment for anyone who is working with their body, whether it is training towards a sports goal or changing faulty, pain causing postures.

Contact Lisa to book an initial Biokinetic assessment or sports massage. Exercise therapy sessions are one-on-one.
